so sometimes i wonder about my coworkers. what their lives have been like, what they're actually thinking about, how they feel about string cheese, stuff like that. since we're stuck together every day, we do talk, and i know who has kids or who's divorced or whatever, but it's mostly just small talk, to pass the time. some people open up completely, some just go through the polite little nothings that make up the conversations of people who don't really know each other. sometimes, though, i'll catch of glimpse of something behind the politeness, some new aspect of that person's self, something i hadn't thought of, or even considered. and although a good portion of judging is on the strength of appearance, i have seen that people are rarely ever just surface. they have substance underneath that, which you may never comprehend. the person you pass once on the street, the person you work with for months, you may not really know either one of these people. they may only be letting you see what they want you to see, or you may be laboring under certain assumptions that are patently untrue. and you may never realize your misjudgement, your mistake, at all.
so i keep my eyes open and observe, looking for the slippage of a polite mask, for some hint of the substance beneath the surface. and i wonder who else does the same.

i do. always. it can be more entertaining than a murder-mystery. it reminds me of the feeling you get when you're writing a story... except it isn't YOU that controls all the twists and turns; it's those that you observe.
