Takayama

Part 1 of my Japan trip: Takayama, a town in the Japanese Alps.

In case you were wondering, they do have scarecrows in Japan! Ah ha ha ha haaa....
The train ride to Takayama. Ooh, look at the pretty rice fields!

I didn't see any snow on the mountains, but maybe that's because it was July. The train went past lots and lots of (vacant) ski resorts. Apparently the Japanese are huge ski fiends, but not in the summer.

Saturday morning is market day. They have markets all week, but Saturday is when the big one is. And on the right, a picture of my hotel room. Stayed in a ryokan, a traditional Japanese hotel. They had bamboo mats and you slept on the floor. But they also had a tv with a satellite dish. I learned to enjoy Japanese soaps.

Went to many many many temples in Takayama. This one was fun because it was only the second one I'd seen, and the novelty hadn't quite worn off yet. They had a festival float museum there as well. It was actually very relaxing, except for when I had to climb lots of steep stone stairs.

Takayama also had a really cool "old town." It was on the far side of the river, and it had been completely restored. It was like being in Seven Samurai, except for that whole thing about bandits attacking the village. Oh, and also there were no samurai. I also tried out the pachinko parlor, which was right across the street, but I really sucked at it. In case ya didn't know, pachinko is supposed to be like pinball for retards, but japanese, and not actually pinball. There's this knob you have to turn, and then all this other shit happens, and anyways, it was really confusing. But funny.
