unlike some OTHER scottish actors, I can speak with a MOCKNEY ACCENT!...and i have pockets.

floating in the gloriousness of the doctor who christmas special. rtd managed to not bring too much schlock, and i thoroughly enjoyed myself. so much of a girly gurl that i teared up when he was talking about rose. that last line...so perfect. been through the time wars, last survivor of his race (at least, that we know of right now-i hope the face of boe's reveal isn't going to be "you are not alone," because then what have all those gallifreyans died for? such a waste), and he can still be so broken up over losing a traveling companion, a human no less. really liked the wedding reception with the retro "love don't roam." groovy, baby. the lyrics fit, and i thought the flashback was very well done, considering how bad it could've gone.
the empress of racnoss...eurgh. not quite sure that was realized well. i think my empathy for her ("my children are dying! die-ing! diiiie-iiing!") far outweighed her evil villain street cred. how comic book was she? on the other hand, i loved the doctor going homicidal, "let's wipe out a race today!" for me it was a shout-out to nine, who will always be MY doctor, but that may just be because i've read the hilarious dark! doctor! (link) comic strips one too many times. anger management, anyone?
i'm interested to see what ten's relationship will be with martha. i've heard somewhere that, as a fanboy, rtd can only approach the character of the doctor sideways, through the companion's perspective. i'm not sure exactly how much of that applies, but it's certainly true that he tends to focus more on the relationship between the two main characters, and uses it as an underlying theme. for me, doomsday is still a little too raw, and the special tonight enforced that, as it was a direct continuation from doomsday. if there's one thing i'm anal about, it's character continuity. please can we not see ten and martha bouncing into bed together (although this is definitely occurring-they'll have all their clothes on but be flirty-eurgh), with just a cursory reference to rose? "you're not replacing her," and then martha proceeds to do just that.
i'm glad they cut the bit at the beginning where ten was meant to have chucked rose's shirt into the supernova; that really is too much, and i think it would've felt wrong. *shrugs*
i thought the tanks weren't exactly necessary, but i guess the empress had to snuff it somehow, as she wasn't going to be a recurring character. this ep was very good as a standalone; nobody in it (except the doctor!) will be back for series three. well, watching this will (probably) tide me over until then. series three, oooh. so close, and yet, so far.
and having an episode of torchwood last night that didn't suck at all and actually made sense of the series was great. it's my fandom and they'll have to do something completely unforgivable for me to leave, but it's nice to have my patience and my faith rewarded.
new years' day, last two episodes of torchwood series one. you gotta be ready.
going back to watch that beautiful last line again.
is it january yet?
