Labels: who? exactly.
still up in the air about smith & jones. rtd's writing usually lacks a certain something (the judoon are rhinos?! how the hell can she suck out someone's blood with a regular STRAW that looks like it came from freaking TESCO'S, fer chrissakes?!), but all the same, the doctor is back for what looks like another season of intergalactic fun and mayhem.
martha's gonna have to prove herself, at least to me, before i cotton on to her. murray gold wrote her a lovely theme that i'm sure she's perfectly deserving of, but it's gonna take more than a few "good thinking there, martha!"'s on the doctor's part for me to like her. she quite obviously has a massive crush on the doctor, but has to just as fervently declare that no, she doesn't go for aliens, she prefers humans, thank-you-very-much. it'll be interesting to see what happens to her when the doctor gets married in family of blood, later on in this series. well, i'm actually quite curious about that myself. according to tennant, the doctor doesn't not get married, which is just such a wonderfully ambiguous statement that you can't help but wonder what's going to happen.
still, if i had a family like martha's, i don't think i'd mind going to the parts of the universe that they're not in.
still, more wonderful characterization of the doctor. man's an absolute nutball, spent half the ep running around a hospital with no shoes on. i'm glad to see that the brown suit isn't gone forever-it was probably just the costume department going "new companion, new suit." which is all very well and good, but i love the brown suit. shiny.
and he got a new sonic screwdriver! seems like he's getting a lot of new stuff lately. *grumbles* i wonder if it's an upgrade, with more features (well, the old one had everything, but you never know). it seems to look much the same as the old one.
and lovely continuity with the end of torchwood. rtd was right, saxon is definitely this season's bad wolf. after runaway bride, when the soldier in that tank mentioned mr. saxon, i was alert and on the lookout for more saxon in this ep. i only caught two references in smith & jones, but i'm sure there are more-the first when martha was at home getting ready for the party, and the radio announcer made a reference to mr. saxon being right about extraterrestrial life (paraphrasing, of course); the second when martha followed the doctor down the alley, and over her left shoulder, gloriously illuminated, was a "vote for saxon" poster exactly like the ones in the last two eps of torchwood. aren't we excited! i know john simm is going to be mr. saxon, but i wonder who mr. saxon is exactly (which is what everyone is supposed to be wondering, of course). i think he's either the master (in which case, squee!), or another timelord who escaped the time war, but it's definite that he's a baddie, so hip hip hooray.
shakespeare and witchcraft in elizabethan london next week! can't wait!
