fifty-seven academics just punched the air

and my first thought was of course, "oh, this writer must be a jasper fforde fan." because otherwise that's gotta be plagiarism, because creative borrowing like that don't fly. but who knows? Love's Labours Won is still fforde's idea, imho.

the witch bits were very hokey, as they so often are in less-than-successful attempts to combine sci-fi and the supernatural. the shakespeare code is most definitely this season's the unquiet dead or even to a certain extent tooth and claw. but i still liked unquiet dead better.
missed the saxon reference, but i don't doubt that there was at least one. there were two harry potter references, however, and way way waaaay too many shakespeare in-jokes. no matter how much of a genius we think shakespeare was, he apparently got most of the good stuff from the Doctor.
now i can place the scene where they're running and the Doctor is wrong about which way they should be heading. i saw a tantalizingly poorly filmed, very short (and slightly illegal) clip of this from when they were filming, so i was on the lookout for when it would be in the series.

tearing my hair out at the overly simplistic way the Doctor described time travel to martha. for one thing, you can change the future without necessarily meaning to, not by killing your grandfather of course, but all the same. the fact that they're in elizabethan england, wearing non contemp clothes, and just generally sticking out like sore thumbs must have some kind of impact. just striding round like you own the place doesn't work all the time.
but it really isn't exactly like back to the future. yes, they can travel back in time and yes, their actions do make a difference in future events. but the weird thing in back to the future is that it seems to take time for changes to take effect, when logically they should happen instantly, as soon as you've taken a particular course of action. of course, with back to the future parallel universes were only created when really big things happened, as opposed to yes-i-will-have-a-salad-today-type of decisions causing time to split and creating another universe where you don't have salad. which still doesn't explain where the energy comes from to cause the split. a finite universe makes more sense, especially when dealing with the Doctor. so back to the future don't apply here.

hooray for stillpiningforrose!Doctor! "rose would see what i'm missing, i fight for rose," ahahahahahaaa. excellent. as i've mentioned only about a few million times before, character continuity makes me go oooooh with delight. there's a rose-shaped hole in his universe, and while he may have a shiny new sidekick, he still needs to be emo-ing, at least for now.
and isn't it just great that he's already read book 7 of harry potter? it made him cry. obviously numerous pop culture references abounded in this ep.
and ya gotta love elizabeth i channeling the queen of hearts from alice in wonderland. "off with his head!" nice setup for a return to this time (or a little earlier, anyways), but it'll have to be during tennant's tenure (which is almost as much fun to type as it is to say), since she recognized him. and since it's later in his timeline, he'll be sure to avoid shakespeare, since good ol' will didn't recognize him. or ya know, it could've been much much earlier in the queen's life. interesting to see if they follow up on that, or if it becomes a "missing" adventure and eventually gets turned into a book or audio.

when shakespeare was giving his little soliloquy to combat the alien menace (such as it was), i kept hoping that SpecOps-27 Agent Thursday Next would turn up and demand to run it through the Verse Meter Analyzer, on the suspicion that it was a fake.

next saturday, ardal o'hanlon as a cat alien, just like the sisters of plenitude in new earth, but hopefully much cooler. honestly, they just keep recycling their aliens (can't let a perfectly expensive costume be used once and go to waste), but still, it's ardal o'hanlon! will the face of boe's four words be, "you are not alone," or something else?
