if you wanna try, if you wanna try, there's no worse you can do

ok, for me, tonight's episode was pretty much all about the squee.

so i'm just gonna get this out of the way right off the bat: parkman. and mohinder. are living together. in mohinder's apartment. to "protect molly."
rare pair much? but yeah, that is just totally awesome. and i'm sure that it's all about molly. *cough* really.
no, really.

and one more thing: takezo kensei is a GAIJIN?!!! really, that's kinda like tom cruise in the last samurai with the wince-ness. but it's sark, so it's actually just awesome, and you can see where hiro's gonna take it.
so it's just gotta be like the biggest gaijin smash ever.

i totally called that they'd "reveal" that peter petrelli was *gasp* alive! at the end of the ep. only fair, really. AND HIS PRIDDY FLOPSY HAIRS IS ALL GONES!!!! LE NO!!!! i thought he might have amnesia. or something similar. again, only fair for his required emo-ness. cos he is handcuffed. shirtless. with a haircut (now essential for any good mindwiping procedure). inside a shipping crate. and he apparently has no ipods. which the irish people are pissed about.
plus! he gets tortured! *taps fingers together in approved villain fashion* that's just awesome.

things i was also expecting: 1) claire to be stupid and have to heal and possibly compromise herself. but that guy? we don't like him. nathan can fly. see? OMG-i'm-so-alternative boy is already rendered redundant. robots and aliens? how about PIRATES and NINJAS, cretino? vampires and werewolves? or (the decidedly non-pc) cowboys and indians? puritans and roundheads? north and south? crips and bloods? jets and sharks? (hey, at least there'd be dancing. and singing. and finger-snapping.)
2) the actually really bad guy (because it can get worse than linderman!) to be alluded to even more! now with even more afraid!â„¢molly!
3) parkman to be alive. and getting his badge fo reals, yo. he didn't need that wife. even if she was pregnant. it was probably someone else's. because the actress has better things to do with her time. and parkman didn't need her anyway, because, mohinder. yeah.

things i was not expecting: 1) nathan to be alive. i don't keep up with any spoilers for heroes, so i didn't know about casting for this season. so i'm pleased with this new emo!bearded!alcoholic!nathan. how sweet is that?
2) mr. "i am a badass with my horn-rimmed glasses of badassitude" bennet working at what essentially amounts to a kinko's and taking crap from some asshat with no conception of personal space. or basic niceties. luckily, we find out that he's on a mission to bring the company down. for good. and he puts a major hurt on the asshole manager and tells him that he'll take a break when and for how long he damn well pleases, thank you very much.
3) mohinder to not repeat his mistakes and be a secret agent and help mr. bennet bring down the company. looks like the boy's on the side of the angels after all (for now, anyway). and the dude who turns stuff into gold? BEST POWER EVER.

yay for the cadre of the peoples of the stuff being killed off (and the mysterious symbol on the photos) by a mysterious hooded guy! poor hiro, he'll get back and his dad will be dead. as for the grandma with her 'mazin' manicure, whatevs. pfft.
and ando? you know i love you and all (especially with your fabulous moussed-up hair and your unswerving dedication to hiro), but really. it took you that long to find a SWORD in NEW YORK CITY?!!! honey. please.

i like maya, the girl with the cool eye-bleedy powers of death. but mostly for her brother, because he's hot.
i would've liked to see more sylar in the ep (or any sylar, really) and i can understand to a certain extent why they didn't have him. but again, i don't have to like it.

*sighs* we've gotta get into it next week, baby.

at least there's house. hugh laurie, you're on tomorrow night, so you'd better bring the snark. or we will be having issues. k?

escribeme pronto

i've noticed that i don't write in my blog as much as i used to.
is it a crutch that i don't need anymore? am i too busy to write? (the answer to the second one is no.) do i not want to write? (probably not.)

we walked to little tokyo for dinner and i had excellent ramen. possibly the best ramen ever. and green tea, which i haven't had in ages. and then they were showing last season's finale of heroes (since new eps start next mon, and house starts next tues OMGSQUEE even tho NOBODY SAW FIT TO GIVE HUGH LAURIE A BEST ACTOR EMMY NOW DID THEY?!!!! >:( BASTARDS), and i still thought it sucked. possibly more, since i've seen it once already. but the teaser for next week looks amazing, as it should. no peter petrelli that i could see (but he's "dead," yes?), but sylar was prominently front and center, grinning evilly as per usual.
so there's that.

i want the writing for torchwood to get better. i want the characterizations in the second series to be better, and make sense, and be logical. most of all i want them not to sink my ship, but hardcore shipper that i am, even i realize that i have to give way to canon when they state it in no uncertain terms (or do i? thanks, jkr, for killing my OTP ded! and thanks for sending the message to millions of impressionable girls that if they just dangle after their TWU WUV long enough, he'll get his head out of his ass, finally acknowledge their existence, and it'll dawn on him that he loves them! all was well, my ass). *ahem* luckily, it looks like myself and the other few billion janto shippers out there (is there any other reason to watch the show? le no) might not have to worry so much, if gareth david-lloyd's comments at recent cons are anything to go on.

i know there's a lot of talk about jack and gwen getting together (rtd much? le no again), and ianto getting a girlfriend (and almost-certainly-legit info about future tosh/owen--i don't care, i just don't want any more of The Gwen And Owen Show, and most especially no more of The Gwen Show period), but misdirection does play a huge part in controlling leaks. at this point in the game, speculation is all we have, so no rumor is too stupid. really. but gdl says he gets lots and lots more glorious screen time, and there'll be more humor in series 2 (thank god), the team will be closer, and that all of us shippy fangirls wouldn't be disappointed.

my hope is that series 2 is stellar and fully realizes the potential that was there in series 1, so that when mr. tennanty tennant goes away for the year to be hamlet, because it will be just a year (*crosses fingers really hard. and toes. and arms. and legs. everything, really.*), and we have our three little rtd-penned speshuls (durr!) instead of a proper series 5, they focus their time and energy on torchwood. and it will be good. oh yes.

just another thought: if jack/ianto is the show's canon otp, as so many of us think/hope/pray, then they'll have moments, but they won't actually get together. because that's not how tv shows work (off the top of my head, i'm think alias, frasier--but nobody cared anyway, did they?--and lots more, i'm sure). they can't get together until the very end (if they are granted a chance for closure, even). well, i guess we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.

aaand i'm back on another west wing kick. what can i say, intelligent tv programming eludes me. so i seek out the sorkin (alliteration yes!). other than the fact that tww was always a liberal's wet dream (martin sheen is the leader of the free world. and the people who work for him are smart, more than competent, and want to Change The World), sorkin's gift for writing killer dialogue makes each episode awesome. nobody writes banter like sorkin does. and after seven long years they saw fit to let my otp be canon, and now POTUS and FLOTUS have matching his-and-hers COSes (and they're married and have freakishly smart children yes!).

...it strikes me that all the shows i watch, have watched, or will watch, i watch because i ship a particular pairing. there's house (house/cuddy--you know you see it!), tww (josh/donna), sports night (dana/casey), studio 60 (danny/jordan, but to a lesser degree, i confess--that could have been written better), bsg (starbuck/apollo, which would've been far less probable in the original series), stargate atlantis (dr. weir/col. sheppard), torchwood (jack/ianto), and i could really go on but i have to stop there, because, yeah.

anyway, as far as i can tell, the only two shows that i don't have an otp in are doctor who and heroes. very important omissions, but omissions they are. because while heroes is great, i haven't seen anything major to ship yet, and even though i loved the doctor/rose to death, i can't stop watching. because it's the doctor.

and forget what i said about not writing a lot. i think it's the sugar from the cupcakes.

kokoro nante iranai

oh, heroes, i love you, but sometimes i just wanna slap you like a redheaded stepchild (no offense intended to all the red-headed stepchildren out there).
that was a complete and utter non-ending. garrgh.
and now i have to wait! until the fall! for you guys to get your shit together!
because i have nothing else to look forward to! battlestar galactica won't be on until sometime next spring because they weren't entirely expecting to get renewed after being moved to sunday nights, and i know that torchwood won't be on until early 2008 at best.
and you know i'm not watching that bionic woman crap.
nbc, you are dead to me for killing off studio 60. sure i'll watch heroes, but i'm not giving you any more ratings than absolutely necessary.

look who returned for narratorial duties! i can't say i'm thrilled, but i guess they figure the episode wouldn't be complete without those beautiful british vowels bookending it.

huge set-up for series 2 when molly went, "there's someone i can't find. i don't want to! because he is EEBIL" dun dun DUUN! apparently sylar is not as bad as it gets.
i'm really not so sure about nathan, but peter petrelli is so not dead. boy's a survivor. he'll float back down to earth in tiny particles and re-form if that's what it takes. that much hope and idealism don't die easy.
unless he killed his brother, which would be bad.

speaking of which, what the SHIT was up with nathan this ep? i know he's been vacillating all season (it's in his frakking character to do so), but i think his moms brainwashed him or something. cos that was TEH CREEPINESS right there with her fire engine red manicure o' doom. at least he came to his senses in the end.
i know i didn't see the thing coming last week with micah and the voting machines (which would be a GREAT name for a band, btw--they'd do acoustic indie rock songs about the fallacy of believing in bureaucratic governmental voting systems), but i really didn't expect that all they really had to do was fly peter up into the atmosphere and have him detonate safely, no doubt raining particles of radioactive material all over manhattan.

loved the superkids! eying one another. molly just gave micah this great admiring look, like, hey, you've got cool powers! it's like teen titans except good. tot!titans, really.
and wosshisname didn't die, after bleeding sluggishly from a gut shot for donkey's years. oh well, happy little super!family and all.
parkman can't die. he's our hero.

so happy to see sylar escape into the sewers. le yay! he's so emo he deserves to live and go slicy-slicy with more peoples' heads.

the format got a little weird there at the end. what is this "volume one" and "volume two" shit? i didn't see that one at all.
and hiro ending up in feudal japan? seriously, that was such a huge WTF?! moment that i was just like, guh? they'd been building to this OMGNEWYORKGOEXPLODY thing all season, then they dispatch it in fairly short order with the deus ex machina of nathan's mad flying skillz, and all of a sudden WE'S IN 16TH-CENTURY JAPAN? stop the world, i wanna get off.
well, i'll have to wait for the rest of "generations" until the fall, so i guess the hiro thing is meant to be considered as a direct lead-in to series two, the preview to hold you off until fall.

the only thing that i really missed about this ep was chris eccleston, who i was desperately hoping would turn up, in a sort of you-idiot-you-didn't-learn-control-properly-but-i'm-gonna-fix-it-since-i'm-your-mentor kind of way. i doubt that he'll be back on the show, so i might as well just wait for his role in the dark is rising, which is slated to come out in october.

in other news, i was so excited when i saw that the stardust website is finally up. they don't have a whole bunch yet, but the graphics are great and the ost sounds incredible. i know this already is my must-see movie of the summer, but this lovely site is severely testing my patience. grr.
at least the trailer they have there manages to do it justice. some of the teasers i saw really bit. my understanding is that, if it's anything like neil gaiman's wonderful book, it'll be a sort of victorian-esque fantasy/adventure/supernatural/romantic comedy with sinister magic, ghosts, sky pirates (gotta love sky pirates) and a happy ending. everyone i talk to looks a little leery when i try to explain it to them, and inside their heads i can see them thinking "oh god it's yet another fantasy movie just like eragon or ella enchanted that tries too hard to ride lotr's coattails and gave me a reason to hate the shittiness inherent in a poorly realized fantasy film."
i may have gotten some of the words wrong there, but that's more or less what they're thinking when i talk to them. although i do point out that the two aforementioned shitty movies were excellent books, which in a way made the poor quality of the screenplay all the more painful to witness.
but i digress.
it turns out that all i need to do to persuade these people that stardust is a movie worth seeing is to mention that robert deniro is in it. why this is so i have no idea, but apparently mentioning his name inspires absolute confidence.
and then, just for exercise, at that point i also mention the other people in it. claire danes! peter o'toole! ricky gervais! sienna miller! rupert everett! david kelly (ok, you might not know him by name, but if you saw him you'd know. he's been playing that little mischevious irish gentleman in films and tv shows for years)! and of course michelle pfeiffer as the wicked witch, and ian mckellen as the narrator.
*is dying from anticipation*

and in other other news, robot chicken is doing a 30-minute star wars special to be premiered on adult swim on june 17th, apparently with george lucas' full approval. lucasfilm even helped with some sound fx. we are intrigued.

lots of planets have a north

wow...i just spent most of that episode feeling hugely incredibly sorry for sylar. the poor guy. i'm glad hiro didn't kill him, but at the same time it's bad, since now he's definitely become the sylar we saw five years on, last week.
don't you think it's interesting that the first person he thought to call was mohinder? *is shipping mohinder/sylar so hard* and mohinder was stupid and dialed 911 instead of trying to help him out. it makes for a certain kind of twisted logic--sylar would never blow up half of new york, because there's no payoff for him. not in the same way that slicing off peoples' skulls and taking their powers has, anyway. doing something like going nuclear in downtown nyc scares the piss out of him.

see, that's the problem with the whole idea of the hero archetype, in the comic-book sense. noone is wholly good or wholly evil. that's what they've been showing us all season, but with this intimate look at gabriel/sylar, it's highlighted, underlined, and circled twice. in red ink.
poor stupid sylar and his dead mom. he's never gonna get over that. now he has no reason to be gabriel anymore, and any misgivings he may have felt about stopping what he was doing are gone now. he's going to keep right on being special. his mother told him that he could be president, and that's exactly what he's going to do.

and mohinder's found his sister again, or at least someone he can pretend is his sister, and save her, like he never could with his real sister. i wonder if mohinder's realized how much of an asset molly is to the people holding her, once her powers come back. to be able to find anyone, anywhere...who's to say they'll use that to try to stop sylar? why, combined with mohinder's knowledge, they can keep tabs on every mutant in existence, and do whatever they want with them. mohinder needs to take some time and Think Things Through.

peter petrelli and the cheerleader have a pretty interesting relationship going on, for being uncle and niece. hmm. nathan needs to oppose linderman again, no matter the consequences. i want to see what they're going to use micah for.
and now eccles needs to pop out of the snow like a daisy and do the mentor thing again. come on, help peter out! you can do it!
and talk northern, because that's just cool.

take it easy

ok, alternatefuture!peter petrelli kicks more ass than previously suspected. freaking awesome.
you think they would've realized that sylar really needed to be killed before.
...well, they did, but they just didn't know hiro had to be the one to do it.
i like mohinder better now. hurray for mohinder!
but parkman! good lord, parkman! you idiot.
and what's up with this six-year-old coming in, "this is molly. she's the only one who can STOP SYLAR!!!"

so, by showing us this future, are they showing us what won't happen? you'd think so, right? i'm interested to see how they'll 'end' the series. a little bird told me that it's almost certain to be renewed, since nbc needs all the help they can get, ratings-wise.
the upfronts on may 14th will let us know for sure, though. i'll be watching to see what the hell they do with studio 60, although i have a sinking feeling that since they're showing the back six on may 24th, AFTER the upfronts, they're just gonna bury it in summer programming. hopefully it'll come out on dvd, cos i'll buy it, and so will all the other dedicated s60 fans out there. i just wish nbc would realize that nothing could've survived that timeslot, tell the ratings to go shove it, and have some faith in all the intelligent viewers out there who do NOT want to watch "OMG TEH REAL WEDDING CRASHERZ!!!!".

nbc, please renew our show.
and stick it in the er timeslot, since they don't need it anymore. i promise you'll get your ratings. ignore middle america; we really do like to watch intelligent, well-written shows.

i ain't never been in love, i don't know what it is-she only knows if someone wants her-i want 'em if they want me, i only know they want me

i will never ever understand art history. why is it proper to refer to some artists by their last names and some by their first, with no particular reason why? why is it right to say "leonardo," and wrong to say "da vinci" ?
"michelangelo" i can understand, as opposed to having to call him "buonnaroti," but why is it "claude" and not "lorrain" ?
pfft.

i don't think i was even paying proper attention to heroes, partly because i was falling asleep and partly because some of the dialogue was really cheesy. i was at no point afraid that peter petrelli was actually dead. i wonder if we'll ever see what grandma petrelli's special power is (i'm assuming she has one? yes? please?)
i'm coming gradually to the realization that i really don't like mohinder all that much. not that he's deserving of being nailed to the ceiling, but all the same.
and the mystique chick seems like such a cop-out for the bad guys. no fair, they can go from a to c because they have someone who can look like anyone and is a tolerably good actress. doesn't she have any motivations of her own? don't just prance around in your short skirt and do everything they say! please go rogue (no x-people pun intended) or something!
i'm confused about how sylar got k.o.'d at mohinder's place. maybe i missed something, but it looks like peter was out of it by the time that happened to sylar. yus?
isaac was my least favorite character anyway. i'm interested to see how the fanboy!bike courier will feature later on.
i want eccles back. don't make me wait another five weeks. give me a flashback at least.
but not next week, because next week we go into the future, just in time for sweeps month.

and i can't believe i wasted the better part of my weekend on a drama that's 15 episodes long when THEY DON'T EVEN GET TOGETHER AT THE END. what, i may ask, is the point, then? they're supposed to get together all "rui xi!" "quan!" "at last!" with the hugging and the kissing with the tongues (although in some dramas the girls get preggers from frenching) and the happy chirping birds and the sunset all shinyhappy in the background.
nobody watch hana kimi, i don't care how cracktastic it is, there's no frakking payoff, ok? but you may watch both series of hana yori dango if you are so inclined, because THEY'REINLOVEANDTHEY'REGETTINGMARRIEDANDYOUCAN'TSTOPTHEIRETERNALLOVEAHAHAHAHA.
